Statement | Inspiration | Influences | Process Artist Statement By perceiving patterns intellectually as well as visually we organize our world in order to comprehend it and learn from it. Many of our basic skills at their core are highly patterned activities such as walking or reading. Our ability to read comes from recognizing patterns of letters. Many discoveries in medicine arise from pattern recognition. Associations with numbers, sequences, and patterns form the basis of investigation in my art. In the natural world, there are six underlying growth patterns. Of particular interest to me are the spiral or helix, branching, and meandering. The Fibonacci sequence of numerical relationships and its formation of the golden rectangle/spiral have manifested themselves in my artwork. From this interest the square unit is becoming more prominent, since this is the basic unit for its construction. My most recent work is transforming this interest in patterns and sequences into the structure of quilts from triptychs. The thread connecting these different bodies of work came from an increased interest in fibers. The textile quality of the watercolors created from their process of multiplying individuals orbs or particles of color, to the similar shape created from the ancient Neolithic technique of looping, to the tradition of quilt making. Textiles often remain for following generations, remnants of time and the hand that created them. Quilts traditionally women's work hold stories and designs meaningful to the creator that acquire new import as they are passed down or found by later generations. Alfred North Whitehead's statement concerning patterns resonates with my interest both in patterns as well as the imagery I am concerned with "To see what is general in what is particular, and what is permanent in what is transitory, is the aim of scientific thought."
